Two people were killed when an “older, historic” plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Chino Airport on Saturday, June 15, authorities said.

The twin-engine Lockheed 12A crashed at around 12:35 p.m., said Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokeswoman Mina Kaji.

The plane caught fire after making an emergency landing west of the airport, said Bryan Turner, battalion chief of the Chino Valley Fire District. Firefighters had the fire under control within about 10 minutes before finding the two people inside.

Footage from OnSceneTV showed the silver plane with its engine removed from the fuselage on a lawn near one of the airport’s runways.

Further information on the identification of the two persons is not yet available.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to investigate, Kaji said.

No further information was initially available.
