Pittsburgh Steelers insider predicts replacement for Cam Sutton suspension

PITTSBURGH — It’s unlikely that the Pittsburgh Steelers brought cornerback Cameron Sutton back to town just so he could sit on the bench while they look for other options to fill the starting cornerback position, but for at least part of the season, that might not be their decision.

The threat of a suspension related to his domestic arrest earlier this offseason looms over Sutton and the Steelers as they finish mandatory minicamp and have begun preparing for his possible absence. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said in an appearance on 93.7 The Fan this week that there are two leading candidates as the team heads into summer break.

“Right now, probably Josiah Scott or Beanie Bishop,” Fittipaldo said when asked who would start in Sutton’s place if he was suspended for Week 1. “Beanie Bishop made a nice play (on Thursday), by the way, I think it was in seven shots. There really aren’t a lot of options right now.”

Steelers general manager Omar Khan said in a radio appearance earlier this week that the Steelers did not know what type of disciplinary action, if any, the NFL would take against Sutton. Sutton declined to comment on the matter when speaking to the media after arriving in Pittsburgh.

Fittipaldo added that he would be surprised if the Steelers knew how long Sutton would be suspended by Aug. 1. That would give them some time to sign a free agent if needed.

Bishop was one of the first undrafted free agents the Steelers called up. He was an impressive secondary defender at West Virginia, where he earned All-American status in the 2023 season. As excited as many were that the Steelers were able to snag Bishop, Scott is the more experienced player. The vast majority of his NFL appearances have been as a slot cornerback, and in the 2022 season he played a full season as a starter at that position for the Eagles.

The Steelers have options to replace Sutton. The only question now is if they are needed, how long they are needed and if they can last that time.
