MLB umpire Pat Hoberg appeals disciplinary action following sports betting investigation | Sports

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball plans to discipline umpire Pat Hoberg following an investigation into a possible violation of sports betting policies.

In a statement Friday, the commissioner’s office said Hoberg had decided to appeal the penalty. MLB did not disclose the nature of the violation or the extent of the penalty. MLB said its investigation “found no evidence that games manipulated by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or rigged in any way,” but the league concluded “disciplinary action was warranted.”

MLB said it could not comment further until the appeals process is complete. MLB said it began investigating Hoberg during spring training this year and that he was taken off the field while the investigation was ongoing.
