Volusia officer who hit women on beach with truck leaves agency

The Volusia County beach safety officer who struck two women with a marked patrol car on Memorial Day is no longer with the agency.

Arthur Gendreau had been planning to resign from his post before the incident, said Michael Ryan, spokesman for Volusia County government. The News-Journal has requested his letter of resignation.

The district investigated the incident to determine whether disciplinary action would be taken.

“Because he is no longer an employee of Volusia County, the county has no right to take disciplinary action under local, state or federal labor laws,” Ryan said.

The incident occurred in the north 400 block of Daytona Beach, not far from the Daytona Grande Oceanfront Resort.

Gendreau, a 37-year-old sergeant, had parked and was talking “driver’s door to driver’s door” with another Beach Safety officer. The two men were west of a marked shoulder, an accident report said.

Gendreau continued driving, turning slightly to the right and heading north, when he accidentally struck the two women lying on the beach. The women, two 18-year-olds from Kissimmee, were in stable condition after the incident.
