Deputy police officer from Center Township charged with rape and false imprisonment

The victim said Semorris Powell told her that as a police officer, he would be believed more than she.

INDIANAPOLIS – A deputy with the Center Township Constable’s Office faces multiple charges, including rape, false imprisonment, domestic violence and strangulation.

According to court documents, IMPD officers responded to an apartment in the 3500 block of Park Lodge Court, near East 46th Street and Binford Boulevard, around 2:15 p.m. on February 22.

The victim told police she was assaulted by 27-year-old Deputy Police Officer Semorris Powell. The victim said the assault occurred in front of a child.

Investigators then spoke to the victim on February 26 and March 4 and told them that she had been in an on-off relationship with Powell for seven years.

The victim said she was granted a protection order against Powell in 2017, but it expired in 2019.

According to court documents, the victim reported several incidents in which Powell yelled at her, grabbed her and shook her, threatened to kill her, and told her he was a police officer and could take her child away from her. The victim said Powell also told her that he would be believed more than she was because he was a police officer.

Powell allegedly sent the victim a PDF document titled “Final Apologies” in August 2023 that contained more than 50 lines of “I’m sorry,” including “for hurting you,” “for everything I did in anger,” “for losing control,” and more.

He is also said to have sent the victim a newspaper article about restoring and rebuilding a relationship after domestic violence.
