Police in Nashville, Tennessee, investigate shoplifting at Tanger Outlets; officials comment on security measures taken

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Metro Police are investigating another mall shoplifting incident. The most recent incident occurred at Tanger Outlets in Antioch.

Authorities sent News 2 the following statement on Tuesday:

“South District detectives continue to investigate the attempted shoplifting Saturday afternoon at Perfumania in the Tanger Outlets. Four suspects, who employees said had been there twice in the last week, attempted to steal several hundred dollars worth of merchandise, but passersby held the front door to prevent them from leaving. The suspects were able to leave through the back door, but dropped all the merchandise and left empty-handed.

Metro Councilwoman Joy Styles said on social media that there will be police officers on site as second-line officers, officers paid by Tangier if they want to do the extra work and are not on duty for Metro.

Metro currently has a contract with Tangier. The branch also has its own on-site security staff.

Tangier officials sent News 2 a statement that reads in part:

The center’s safety programs include both visible and invisible measures, and all protocols are supported by local law enforcement. We will continue to stay in contact with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department and retailer safety officers to share information and data that supports our programs and protocols. Tanger has a zero-tolerance policy, which is also enforced by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.”

Styles’ shoplifting should not detract from Tanger’s overall success.

“It’s been a community effort from the beginning and it really doesn’t change the shopping experience. Tangier is doing incredibly well,” Styles said. “It’s important that we don’t treat it like an everyday occurrence. Tangier is not dangerous. It’s perfectly safe to shop here. We’ve had no shoplifting, shoplifting that involved violence.”

Police also provided a photo of the suspects’ alleged getaway car, which you can find below.
