New details in the examination of a skull found in Bayou St. John

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) –– The LSU FACES Lab is currently helping to study a skull found by a magnet fisherman in Bayou St. John.

According to a police report obtained through a public records request, a man flagged down a police officer on the afternoon of May 18 to report that he had pulled a human skull, a rifle barrel and a pistol out of the water.

The report states that the officer found what appeared to be a completely decomposed human skull, missing both the jaw and upper row of teeth. The skull was reportedly wrapped in what appeared to be a shirt or cloth, secured with a padlock and key, and attached to a 15-pound dumbbell.

After collecting evidence at the scene, the Homicide Squad turned the skull over to the Orleans Parish Medical Examiner’s Office and recommended reporting the incident as an unspecified death.

On May 21, the NOPD special unit searched the area with dogs and divers.

Louisiana State University’s FACES laboratory confirmed that it is cooperating in the investigation.

Anyone with information can contact NOPD Third Precinct detectives at 504-658-6030 or Crime Stoppers at 504-822-1111.
