Duo charged after Miami-Dade police chase in stolen Honda

MIAMI – On a hot, sunny day in Florida City, detectives noticed two men wearing ski masks, gloves and a hoodie and suspected they were preparing to commit a robbery.

A detective said he began following the stolen silver Honda CRV on Wednesday when they were near Southwest 344 Street and 177 Avenue. A pursuit ensued.

It ended in the area of State Road 826 near Northwest 47th Avenue in the Glenvar Heights neighborhood.

Miami-Dade detectives later reported that the Honda CRV was stolen in Opa-locka on May 24. The suspects arrested were driver Edward L. Payne and passenger Ichemith Joseph.

Records show Payne, 29, was in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center near Doral on Thursday, where he faces five charges in the new case and two charges on a warrant related to the chase.

Payne appeared in court and was charged with assault on a police officer, grand theft auto, fleeing and eluding a police officer at a high rate of speed, resisting arrest and loitering or prowling. The warrants relate to driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident without permission.

Joseph, 22, was arrested earlier this year for possession of a controlled substance, but the case was dismissed. On Thursday, he was charged with two misdemeanors: loitering or prowling and trespassing in an inhabited building.

Miami-Dade County District Judge Christine Hernandez was scheduled to hear Payne’s case and Judge Lizzet Martinez was scheduled to hear Joseph’s case.
