Van driver arrested after Hong Kong accident injures eight people

A delivery truck driver was arrested after eight people were injured in an accident in Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui district on Saturday ahead of a drone show in Victoria Harbour.

The van crashed on a safety island between Salisbury Road and Nathan Road shortly before 7 p.m., with exhaust fumes escaping from the vehicle.

Paramedics treated eight people at the scene, including an auxiliary police officer and seven bystanders. Five people, including the officer, were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

It was believed that the driver lost control of his vehicle while travelling towards Salisbury Road and crashed into a traffic light and the traffic island.

Dangerous driving can result in three years in prison.

On Saturday evening, crowds of people flocked to Tsim Sha Tsui promenade to watch a drone show featuring the popular Japanese manga character Doraemon.
