The Minot Police Department has announced the return of the “I was caught” Summer safety program that rewards local youth who wear protective helmets while riding bicycles, skateboards, scooters or rollerblades.

“The previous campaign was always a bit fun to patrol in the summer,” Said Captain Justin Sundheim. “It’s fun to see the smile on a child’s face when a police officer catches them wearing a helmet and gives them the ‘I Got Caught’ award. Honestly, some of the brightest faces come from our police officers.”

After the AAA-sponsored national program was discontinued, police wanted to continue the program through a partnership with Jar+Cone, an ice cream parlor in downtown Minot.

“We are grateful to Eric and his team at Jar+Cone for their invaluable support in implementing this program at the local level,” said T Kvigne, public safety information and outreach officer for the City of Minot. “Jar+Cone is generously providing free ice cream to children our officers spot wearing hard hats this summer, underscoring our community’s commitment to safety.”
