Police investigate incident involving road traffic shooting

A suspect was arrested in connection with a road rage shooting.

On Wednesday (May 22), Statesville Police responded to a shooting call in the area of MLK, Jr. Park and Lakewood Drive just after 2:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers learned that a female motorist was involved in a driving aggression incident with another vehicle. The situation escalated when the other vehicle followed her. To ensure her safety, she drove to the National Guard Armory and called 911.

The suspect’s vehicle followed her into the parking lot of the National Guard Armory. A male suspect exited his vehicle, pulled out a handgun and fired several shots at the ground and the vehicle containing the female driver and her minor daughter. One of the bullets hit the vehicle. Fortunately, neither the driver nor her underage daughter were injured.

The suspect then fled the scene. Thanks to the detailed description of the victim and the vehicle, officers were soon able to locate the suspect’s vehicle parked next to a house on Fieldstone Circle.

When officers arrived at the suspect’s residence, he refused to come to the door. Knowing the suspect was armed, officers set up a security perimeter around the home and repeatedly attempted to lure him out. Based on the events and evidence collected, a search warrant was issued.

Officers maintained their positions and continued to attempt to remove the suspect. At approximately 5:30 p.m., the suspect exited the home and was taken into custody without incident after complying with officers’ instructions.

The suspect was subsequently taken to a local hospital for medical examination. Since the case is still under ongoing investigation, the suspect’s name has been withheld.
