A federal investigation into the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice is underway

A federal civil rights investigation is underway into the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice, which includes the facility in neighboring Adair County.

The system has recently come under scrutiny, particularly after a riot that occurred at the Adair County facility in November 2022.

Federal investigators from the U.S. Department of Justice will examine whether the detention centers use excessive force, isolation practices, protection from abuse and sexual violence, as well as mental health care, education and services for children with disabilities, according to a report.
