Haryana’s self-proclaimed godman ‘Jalebi Baba’, convicted of raping his students, dies in prison

HISAR: Self-proclaimed godman Baba Billu Ram, popularly known as ‘Jalebi Baba’, died in prison on Tuesday evening due to a heart attack.

Ram was sentenced to 14 years in prison for raping three of his students, including a minor, and filming the act. At the time of his death, he was serving his sentence in Hisar Central Jail in Haryana.

Ram’s lawyer Gajender Pandey said that his client happens to be a diabetic and he succumbed to a heart attack triggered by his deteriorating health.

Police said the inmate complained of feeling unwell on Tuesday evening, following which he was immediately rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ram, also known as Amarpuri, was buried on Wednesday after a post-mortem.

Notably, he was put behind bars in January 2023 after he was found guilty by a Fatehabad court of raping three students, including a minor, and filming the obscene acts.

The self-proclaimed godman was nicknamed ‘Jalebi Baba’ because he sold jalebis from a handcart in Tohana in Fatehabad district of Haryana.

But the tide turned for him when he became a notorious figure known for allegedly indulging in occult practices.

According to sources, after fully transforming, Ram bought a house and also built a temple with a basement where he committed the heinous crimes.

In early July 2019, a victim complained to the police about him, accusing him of forcing her to have physical relations with him when she approached him seeking treatment for “opri parai”.

During investigation, police officers made a shocking discovery after recovering sedative tablets and a video cassette recorder (VCR) from Tohana.

It is worth mentioning that a huge protest broke out against the self-proclaimed godman after his videos went viral.

A case was registered against him after a charge sheet was filed in 2020, following which he was subsequently arrested.

Nearly 20 witnesses testified against Ram in court, leading to his imprisonment and the imposition of a fine of Rs. 35,000.

After his arrest, police seized around 120 alleged sex videos of him.
