What to expect for August

HOUSTON – As we say goodbye to a rainy July in Houston, we turn our attention to August, which begins Thursday!

Typically, August is the hottest month of the year in Houston, but we’ll start to see some relief by the end of the month! Our average high temperature drops to 93° by the end of the month, and our average low temperature drops to 74°. While it’s still warm, it’s 2° cooler than it was at the beginning of the month.

One thing that surprises many people is that we start to see a significant loss of daylight in August. This is easily seen through our sunset times. While we have been enjoying sunsets at 8pm (or later) since early May, starting August 17th, our sunsets will be at 7pm.

At the end of the month, sunset is at 7:44 PM! That’s almost 30 minutes earlier than what we have now.

If you’re into astronomy, the Perseid meteor shower peaks from August 10th to 13th! The best time to see the meteor shower is between midnight and sunrise.

Make sure to get away from city lights and give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. Our August full moon falls on the 19th this year. The August full moon is called the Sturgeon Moon.

Our weather pattern is shifting toward warm conditions. The CPC (Climate Prediction Center) is expecting temperatures to be above average across Texas for the month. Areas in West Texas are expected to be well above average.

As for precipitation, the CPC continues to indicate that Southeast Texas will see above average precipitation. This is likely because we will begin to see our typical summer sea breeze showers in August. Climatologically, we also expect the tropics to become active, but as of now, we do not anticipate any tropical issues for Houston.

Have a great August!
