Free preschool in Houston: Bezos Academy will open 2 more preschools

A preschool will be located north of Houston. The other will be in the third room.

HOUSTON — Preschool can be expensive. For this reason, New Hope Housing (NHH), a provider of affordable housing and services, and Bezos Academy are partnering to create two tuition-free preschools in the Houston area.

According to NHH, preschools will be located in community buildings located in affordable housing developments.

Bezos Academy Houston – Northside will be located in NHH’s Berry development, located at 8855 McGallion Road. Bezos Academy Houston – Third Ward will be located in NHH’s Gray development, located at 2604 Gray Street.

These two new locations will build on NHH’s partnership with Bezos Academy in the Houston area, having already opened the Bezos Academy Houston – Southside location in NHH’s Reed development in September 2023.

“Affordable housing and education are the keys to unlocking the potential of our communities,” NHH President and CEO Joy Horak-Brown said in a press release.

Horak-Brown said that by 2026 all three sites will be operational.

“We look forward to joining the Bezos Academy to cultivate a new generation of creative leaders and lifelong learners,” Horak-Brown said.

Bezos Academy President Mike George said they intend to open a total of six tuition-free preschools in the area over the next few years.

“Opening Bezos Academy preschools in affordable housing communities is a game-changer for parents who must juggle the complexities of child care and work,” George said.

According to the NHH, families earning up to 400 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for the schools. This represents a family income of approximately $125,000 or less for a family of four.
