Death of inmate in Adams County Jail under investigation

FOR CITY TIMES

FRIENDSHIP – An inmate originally from another county died while incarcerated in the Adams County Jail.

According to Sheriff Brent York, a 38-year-old male inmate was found unconscious in his cell shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday, July 15. Officers immediately began life-saving measures. Four minutes later, Lifestar Ambulance arrived at the prison and began life-saving measures. Additional patrol officers also assisted. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead.

The inmate was initially taken into custody in another county on June 21 and transferred to the Adams County Jail on July 1, where he was held as a convicted inmate.

Wisconsin State Statute 175.47 requires that all investigations involving police officer-involved deaths be conducted by an outside agency. This in-custody death investigation is not covered by that statute. However, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office has asked the Waushara and Marquette County Sheriff’s Offices to complete the investigation in the interest of transparency.

In addition, a notification was made to the regional detention center specialist by the Bureau of Detention Centers. In accordance with the law and administrative regulations, the Bureau of Detention Centers will also investigate this incident.
