Thai police said in a separate statement that all six people were foreigners.

The incident took place at the posh Grand Hyatt Erawan hotel in Bangkok and came at a time when Thailand is looking to further promote its tourism sector, a key driver of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy.

“The Prime Minister has instructed all authorities to take urgent measures to avoid impacts on tourism,” the Thai government said in a statement.

A police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied earlier reports in Thai media that the six people were killed in a shootout, but declined to provide further details.

The US and Vietnamese embassies in Bangkok did not respond to calls from Reuters.
