First warning due to heat and storm risk

QUINCY (WGEM) – We have a First warning for today for two reasons. 1) High heat and humidity and 2) Possibility of a few strong to severe thunderstorms.

Heat and Humidity: We’ll start the day muggy and warm, with temperatures in the 21s. Plenty of sunshine is expected for most of the day. You may see a few more clouds in the afternoon and evening, as some upper and mid-elevation clouds move into our area. The sunshine and light breeze from the south/southwest will push daytime highs to over 35s across much of the area. Temperatures may reach over 35s in some cities. Also note that our dew points are very high, ranging between 25 and 25 degrees. The combination of heat and humidity will make it feel hotter than it really is, with perceived temperatures ranging between 38 and 46 degrees. These types of conditions can be taxing on the body, so frequent breaks from the air conditioning and water will be important today. And please bring your pets inside! They’ll be MUCH hotter in their fur coats than you will be.

Probability of strong/severe storms:

The daytime hours will remain calm and dry. Clouds will become increasingly dense during the first half of the night as a cold front approaches. While the northern part of the Tri-States (counties like Lee in Iowa and Hancock and McDonough in Illinois) could get hit with a few isolated showers and thunderstorms, our latest fast-updating models show that first little round actually missing most of us. Then starting around 1 a.m., more isolated showers and thunderstorms seem possible. Models show that probability being highest on the Illinois side. Because these storms would be so scattered and not stretch across the entire Tri-State region, much of our area would once again be spared rain.

Tomorrow morning, the cold front mentioned above will stall over us. This means that the chance for some showers and thunderstorms will remain. However, the rain will be very isolated, with plenty of dry time in between. Tomorrow early in the evening, there will still be some isolated showers and thunderstorms in our area before they subside.
