Beaver bite in Budapest: Beaver attacks woman in the Danube

A beaver bite may initially sound strange as a source of danger, but the number of beavers around the Danube has increased significantly in the last ten years, so it is not a rarity.

RTL News reported that a woman walking her dog in the heat of the day found herself knee-deep in the water of the Danube on Népsziget in Budapest. While bathing, she was first hit by something and then felt a sharp pain in her leg. It later turned out that she had been bitten by a beaver.

Dávid Nagy, the MKKP municipal representative, said the woman immediately ran out of the water where she noticed the beaver and immediately sought medical help. Since then, she has had to return daily for treatments and vaccinations.

“The lady is currently going for vaccinations (…), she is receiving various treatments, it is a mild to moderately painful, by no means pleasant experience,” said David Nagy.

According to locals who were interviewed about the incident, the beavers appear mainly at dusk and are becoming more and more common. Since the major floods in 2013, the number of beavers around the Danube has increased significantly, according to experts.

The woman shared her story on social media, stressing that she does not blame the beaver as she had entered the animal’s habitat. However, several opinions say that it would be wise to put up warning signs in the area to prevent similar accidents.
