1 dead and one injured after shooting at vigil for Khyree Jackson and 2 other former college football players who died in car crash

BALTIMORE – A man died and a woman was hospitalized after a shooting outside Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro Friday night that followed a vigil for NFL rookie Khyree Jackson and two others killed in a car crash last weekend, police said.

After being found with gunshot wounds around 10 p.m., the man and woman were taken to the hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, Prince George’s County police said. The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening, police added.

Officers were deployed outside the facility during the ceremony and began departing as soon as the vigil ended, Captain Sukhjit Batth said in a live video from the scene on Facebook.

Shortly afterward, officers heard gunshots and drove back to the school. Batth said people in the area were performing life-saving measures on the woman. When officers arrived, they flagged them down and police found a man who had also been shot, Batth said. Officers and citizens also attempted life-saving measures on the man. They were both taken to the hospital, where the man was pronounced dead.

A weapon was found at the crime scene, police added.

The department is currently investigating what led to the shooting, Batth said.

Last Saturday morning at approximately 3:14 a.m., police responded to a crash in Upper Marlboro. Upon investigation, police determined that Cori Clingman, 23, of Upper Marlboro, was driving a silver Infiniti Q50 traveling north on Route 4/Pennsylvania Avenue when she attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed, striking a maroon Dodge Charger and a silver Chevrolet Impala. Police believe alcohol was a factor.

Jackson, 24, of Waldorf, and Isaiah Hazel, 23, of Upper Marlboro were pronounced dead at the scene. Anthony Lytton, Jr., 24, of Upper Marlboro was pronounced dead at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center.

According to a tweet from Wise Athletics, the men were remembered during a vigil at the high school on Friday night.

Jackson was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft after playing two seasons as a cornerback at Alabama and finishing his college career at Oregon.
