Police prevent major attack after terrorists fire on police post in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur

Srinagar:

The Sang police post in Basantgarh, Udhampur, came under terrorist fire this evening, two days after five soldiers were killed in a deadly ambush in the area on Tuesday. However, alert police officials struck back promptly and forced the terrorists to flee, averting a major tragedy.

According to sources, three heavily armed terrorists were involved in the attack.

Basantgrah borders Kathua district, where an army convoy was ambushed on Monday. Five soldiers were killed and five others injured in the attack. The army and police then launched a large-scale search operation in the dense forests amid heavy rain.

The operation launched from Kathua, Udhampur and Bhaderwah resulted in the arrest of 50 people who are being questioned in connection with the ambush, officials said, news agency PTI reported.

A large-scale hunt has been launched to track down and kill the terrorists, who are believed to be hiding in the forests, it was said.

Additional forces have been deployed in the dense forests of Udhampur, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch districts and fresh searches were conducted in several areas this morning.

On April 28, village defender Mohammad Sharief was killed in an encounter with terrorists in Basantgrah.

Further details are awaited.
