“Metacarpal fracture” for Aleix Espargaro in the sprint at Assen | Savadori suffers back fractures

Already struggling with pain following a bad crash on Friday, Aleix Espargaro lost control of his RS-GP in the dreaded penultimate corner of the final lap of the Assen MotoGP Sprint race on Saturday.

The Aprilia rider, who is traditionally strong in this corner, was about to overtake Fabio di Giannantonio, who was in fifth place, in the next chicane when the accident happened.

The Spaniard rolled over and landed in the gravel bed with a violent rollover before coming to a stop.

The 34-year-old, who will retire at the end of this season, was seen tending to his right hand as stewards helped him leave.

Aprilia reported that initial examinations indicated that neither Espargaro nor wildcard rider Lorenzo Savadori, who crashed earlier in the race, “suffered from serious symptoms.”

“You will undergo a clinical/instrumental examination by the Aprilia Medical Team and the Circuit Medical Center.

“Further information will be available as soon as possible.”

A later update stated that “both Savadori and Espargaro are going to the hospital in Assen to undergo further medical examinations.”

During these examinations, Espargaro was found to have a fracture, but he is still able to take part in the Grand Prix:

“Espargaro underwent an X-ray of his right hand which showed a simple fracture of metacarpal 5, which was confirmed by the CT scan. He will undergo a medical examination tomorrow before the warm-up.”

Earlier in the day, Espargaro had been lucky not to crash when Marc Marquez drove alongside him at the fast Turn 7 during qualifying and crashed.

Aprilia’s last update on Saturday evening was for Savadori, who crashed at Turn 8 on lap 5 of the sprint and suffered the most serious injuries:

“Savadori underwent further clinical and instrumental examination, which revealed multiple fractures of the transverse processes in the lumbar region of the spine. Savadori is unfit to race.”
