Two people were shot dead and two others seriously injured on Thursday in an area known for drug trafficking near Brussels’ Gare de Midi train station, police said.

The incident occurred between 1:00 and 2:00 a.m. near a café in the Saint Gilles district of the Belgian capital. The suspect or suspects fled, a police spokesman said.

A total of three people were injured. Two of them were in critical condition, the third was in stable condition, local police said.

Brussels region authorities identified Saint-Gilles this year as one of 14 drug hotspots in the capital’s 19 districts.

Police have so far been unable to establish any connection between the shooting and illegal drug trafficking in the city.
