6-year-old boy killed in car crash in Des Moines

A 6-year-old boy was seriously injured and later died Sunday afternoon when he was struck by a car. According to Des Moines police, officers responded to a report of a car/pedestrian accident at Water Works Park, 2201 George Flagg Pkwy., at around 3:38 p.m. A 6-year-old boy with critical injuries was found at the scene inside the Fleur Drive park entrance. Individuals on scene began CPR until paramedics arrived and took over. The child was taken by ambulance to Blank Children’s Hospital, where he later died. The incident remains under investigation by the Des Moines Police Department’s Traffic Unit. According to Des Moines police, officers responded to a report of a car-pedestrian accident at Water Works Park, 2201 George Flagg Pkwy., at about 3:38 p.m. A 6-year-old boy with critical injuries was found at the scene of the accident at the Fleur Drive park entrance. Those on scene began CPR until paramedics arrived and took over.

The child was taken by ambulance to Blank Children’s Hospital, where he later died.

The incident remains under investigation by the Des Moines Police Department’s Traffic Unit.

The incident marks the ninth traffic-related fatality in the city in 2024 and the third involving a pedestrian.
