Kalamazoo man arrested for obstructing fire department

When officers arrived at the scene around 2 a.m., they reported that there was a heavy fire in the back half of the house. A crowd formed as they were putting out the fire.

KALAMAZOO, Michigan – A man was arrested for hindering firefighters at a house fire in Kalamazoo early Saturday morning.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, officers received a call from a passerby around 2 a.m. about a structure fire in the 1400 block of N Rose Street.

When officers arrived, they reported a heavy fire had broken out in the back half of the house, but initial firefighting while officers connected the fire hydrants helped limit the damage.

While firefighters were busy extinguishing the fire, a crowd formed outside, according to KDPS, and a Kalamazoo man attempted to enter the home despite being advised not to by firefighters on site.

According to KDPS, the man was arrested for obstructing a fire department operation and is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail.

According to KDPS, the fire was extinguished within about 10 minutes.
