The Texas Education Agency’s continued takeover of HISD is the story overshadowing school districts in the Greater Houston area — and no wonder: HISD is the largest school district in the state, facing most challenges, including a $450 million budget shortfall for the 2024-2025 school year, according to Superintendent Mike Miles.

We wanted to turn our attention to some of the other districts in our region to see what types of challenges they are facing and if the HISD takeover is having a ripple effect. In the audio above, Houston Matters speaks with three reporters covering other districts in Greater Houston: Emily Lincke, who covers Tomball ISD, Spring ISD and Montgomery ISD, for Community Impact Newspapers; Haley Velasco, who covers Clear Creek ISD, Alvin ISD, Pearland ISD and Friendswood ISD, also for Community Impact Newspapers; and our own Natalie Weber, Houston Public Media’s Fort Bend County reporter.
