North Carolina man among three dead after boat capsizes

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) reported that a fishing trip to Banister Lake on June 16 ended with the deaths of three people when their boat capsized.

HALIFAX COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) has reported that a fishing trip to Banister Lake on June 16 ended with the deaths of three people when their boat capsized.

DWR says the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office was notified at approximately 8:41 p.m. Sunday that three people were missing following a boating accident on Banister Lake. Investigators currently believe 20-year-old Zacharich S. Carter of Virgilina, Virginia, 30-year-old Dre’ D. Tucker of Halifax, Virginia, and 22-year-old Elijah L. Tucker of Indian Trail were fishing in a 14-foot aluminum jon boat when they maneuvered sharply, causing the stern to fall below the waterline.

The boat sank and pulled the three victims into the water. They all died at the scene of the accident.

According to DWR, the incident is still ongoing, but none of the victims were wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

In addition to DWR, numerous other agencies arrived at the scene and assisted with the search, including the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office, Halifax Volunteer Fire Department, Halifax County Emergency Medical Services, North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Mecklenburg County Emergency Medical Services, Halifax City Police Department, South Boston Police Department, Clarksville Volunteer Fire Department, Cluster Springs Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, Scottsburg Volunteer Fire Department, South Boston Fire Department, Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department, and the Virginia State Police Aviation Division and Search and Recovery Team.
