Shooting at youth football game leaves one adult dead and 5-year-old injured

A youth football game in Maryland on Saturday morning ended with one dead and a five-year-old injured.

The shooting reportedly occurred in the stands of the football field at Potomac High School, just outside Washington, DC.

Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz said the shooting was the result of an altercation between two people who knew each other – and not an incident on the field.

“They seemed to already know each other at that point and brought an outside issue into this game where 7-year-olds were playing soccer,” he said.

The five-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Aziz said.

“We are grateful and hopeful to hear that the child shot in this incident will recover,” said District Administrator Angela Alsobrooks.

The suspect reportedly left the scene and was not caught, but Aziz assured the community that officers had leads they would follow up on.

“We are firmly convinced that we will bring this person to justice,” Aziz said.
