Portland police discuss security measures for Pride Parade

Police have been planning for months in advance and have announced that patrol cars will be stationed at every major intersection to ensure the safety of all participants in the Portland Pride Parade.

PORTLAND, Maine – Final preparations are underway for Maine’s largest Pride Month celebration.

The event begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday with a festival and parade half an hour later.

“This really gives people in our community a space to be themselves and feel accepted,” said Bri Lane, chair of Pride Portland. “I think it’s really wonderful when Portland is a community that can truly embrace everyone.”

Lane and thousands of others look forward to this event every year, but the mass shooting in Lewiston and recent threats against local drag queens are raising safety concerns at a time of persistent anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric.

“The Portland Police Department will be on site in full force,” said Major Jason King. “We always take these events very seriously. We have increased our security measures at this event, especially in recent years.”

Major King told NEWS CENTER Maine that the department has been planning for months.

“There will be police officers with patrol cars at the major intersections to provide security,” he added. “There will also be volunteers manning some of the smaller intersections along the parade route. (Spectators) will also see some dump trucks providing security at various locations.”

Lane said Portland Police are working closely with Pride Portland to ensure everyone’s safety.
