The Justice Department is expected to release the results of the Phoenix Police Department investigation

PHOENIX — The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to issue a statement Thursday regarding the investigation into civil rights allegations against the Phoenix Police Department. KTAR News have learned.

The Department of Justice began investigating the Phoenix Police Department and the city in August 2021 for possible civil rights violations and abuse of power.

After nearly three years and thousands of documents and videos, the results and review of the department’s practices will be known.

The investigation examined the department’s use-of-force practices, patterns of retaliation related to activities protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, and discrimination against disabled and homeless people.

By August 2023, the city of Phoenix has turned over thousands of police bodycam videos and documents to the Department of Justice. In a press release, the city said it had provided more than 80,000 documents and 20,000 bodycam videos.

To achieve overall improvements, the Crime Reduction Plan 2024 sets out the following five performance measurement objectives:

  • Reduction in violent crime by 5% and property crime by 8%.
  • Increase in arrests for the sale and distribution of fentanyl and methamphetamine by 3%.
  • Reduction of violent crime among young people by 5%.
  • To reduce crime, increase the use of technologies such as drones, license plate readers and gunshot detection devices.
  • Reduce the number of accidents resulting in death and serious injury by 5%.

In December, the department completed the revision of its use of force policies.
