Officials investigate human remains found in Berkeley Co. coal storage facility

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) – An investigation is ongoing after human skeletal remains were found at a Berkeley County coal yard Sunday afternoon.

The Berkeley County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call at 3:15 p.m. about the possible discovery of human remains in the coal yard at the Santee Cooper-Cross Power Plant, Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell said.

Hartwell confirmed the remains were human and that an autopsy was scheduled for Thursday. He said DNA will help identify the remains.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources assisted in the investigation.

The Santee Cooper-Cross Generating Station is a coal-fired power plant in Pineville.
