Tragic incident at Amsterdam Airport: Person dies after falling into running jet engine

In a shocking incident, a person died when he fell into the rotating turbine blades of a passenger plane taking off at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport.

In a post for X on May 29, the Royal Marechaussee wrote: “This afternoon an incident occurred on the Schiphol platform in which a person fell into a running aircraft engine and died. The Marechaussee is launching an investigation.”

Another tweet said: “All passengers and staff on the flight in question have been disembarked and are being cared for.”

According to an AFP report, the incident occurred on the airport’s tarmac, just outside the busy terminal, as a KLM flight was preparing to take off for Billund in Denmark.

The Dutch airline KLM issued a statement on the matter: “Today an incident occurred at Schiphol in which a person got caught in a running aircraft engine. Unfortunately, the person died.”

The carrier did not disclose the identity of the victim. During a conversation with ReutersA Marechaussee spokesman said it was too early to say whether it was an “incident” or suicide.

Citing a Dutch news report AFP mentioned that the aircraft in question is an Embraer short-haul jet used by KLM’s Cityhopper service, which also offers flights to neighbouring locations such as London.
