Liberal woman dies in accident near Shattuck, OK

A fatal crash occurred Sunday evening on E County Road 37, about 731 feet west of US-283, 14 miles north of Shattuck, OK, in Ellis County.

A 2004 Ford F-150, driven by Arely Tarango, age 20, of Liberal, Kansas, was traveling westbound on E County Road 37. After crossing US-283, Tarango lost control on the gravel, causing the Ford to veer off the right side of the roadway, roll over twice before striking a tree and coming to a stop. Tarango was trapped in the truck before she could be extricated using Hurst tools. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Ellis County EMS. Tarango was transported from Shaw Funeral Home to the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner’s Office.

A passenger in the vehicle (name withheld), a minor female***, age 16, of Liberal, was transported by Ellis County Emergency Medical Services to Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck, OK, where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

A second passenger in the vehicle, 18-year-old Eduin Gallegos of Booker, Texas, was transported by Ellis County Emergency Medical Services to Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck, Oklahoma, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
