PEI News: Carleton man dies after boating accident

A 57-year-old man from Carleton, Prince Edward Island, has died in a boating accident in Summerside Harbour.

RCMP said they arrived at Holman Wharf in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, around 9:45 p.m. Saturday night, where an oyster boat had come ashore after what police believe was a collision with a channel marker in Summerside Harbour.

According to a press release, two men were on board the rowing boat at the time. Police believe one of the men was thrown from the boat by the collision.

The RCMP said the second man attempted to rescue the man who fell overboard and was able to bring him to shore.

The island’s emergency services, Summerside police and the Canadian Coast Guard were also on the scene, police said. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) was alerted, but no further assistance was required from there.

An autopsy is performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The investigations are still ongoing.
