Police have posted signs throughout Pelham Bay Park looking for a man wanted for attempted rape on May 18.

According to police, a 15-year-old girl was walking alone in the park at 5 p.m. when a man approached her and started a conversation with her. He then put her in a headlock and dragged her into the woods, where he attempted to sexually assault her.

The teenager was able to fend him off and escape.

It happened at the corner of Stadium Avenue and Middletown Road.

Park visitors say this is a busy area of the park.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have enough police officers here, we have to protect ourselves,” said Myra Ortiz.

The suspect is described as 20 to 30 years old, with medium skin tone, a slim build, a mustache and thick eyebrows. Police say he was last seen wearing a green hoodie and black sweatpants.

Police are offering a $3,500 reward to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction.
