Georgia official and members of the Nelons killed in plane crash in Wyoming

Authorities say a Georgia state official is among the fatalities in a plane crash in Wyoming that also killed several members of a popular gospel group on Friday.

The Nelons, a gospel music family group from Atlanta, were en route to the Gaither Homecoming Cruise in Alaska when the plane crashed near Gillette, Wyoming, according to a statement from Gaither Music Management Group.

Jason and Kelly Nelon Clark, Amber and Nathan Kistler, and their assistant Melodi Hodges were killed in the crash. Pilot Larry Haynie and his wife Melissa were also killed.

Larry Haynie was the chairman of the Georgia Department of Corrections Board, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp confirmed in a statement Saturday. Kemp said in the statement posted on social media that Haynie’s “impact on our state will not be forgotten.”

NTSB investigates crash that killed the Nelons

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the plane crash.

The NTSB’s preliminary report states that a Pilatus PC-12/47E impacted the ground at approximately 1:04 p.m. MDT on Friday. The exact details of the crash are still under investigation.

NTSB media relations officer Keith Holloway told USA TODAY on Saturday that the team was expected to be on site later that day.

“The investigation is still in its early stages and there is not much information available at this time,” Holloway said.

The investigation evaluates the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment.

“The aircraft is in a remote location. Once they have access, they will begin documenting the scene and examining the aircraft,” Holloway said. “The aircraft will then be recovered and taken to a secure facility for further investigation.”

Who are the Nelons?

The Nelons were a gospel family quartet from Atlanta consisting of Kelly Nelon Clark, her husband Jason Clark, and their daughters Amber Nelon Kistler and Autumn Nelon Streetman.

Nelon Streetman, who was not on board the plane, is the only surviving member of the group. She and her husband Jamie Streetman arrived in Seattle and were informed of the crash, Gaither Music said in a statement.

In her own statement, she added that she and her husband “appreciate your continued prayers, love and support in the days ahead.”

The group, formerly The Rex Nelon Singers, was founded in 1977 by Rex Nelon as an offshoot of the group The Lefevres.

The Nelons were inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame in 2016.
