Ozone alert on Friday; chance of rain again this weekend

Unusually mild weather conditions will continue into the afternoon. This pattern is expected to continue, with below-average temperatures throughout the weekend and the chance of intermittent rain showers as early as Saturday, but an even greater chance late Saturday night into early Sunday morning.

What will the weather be like on Friday, July 19th?

Another pleasant afternoon is expected, with daytime highs in the upper 30s in the north, accompanied by ample sunshine and a northeast wind of 5 to 10 mph. This pattern allows a storm system to approach the state this weekend, with increasing chances for some showers and storms. Some storm activity could affect the far western areas tomorrow morning before tapering off as it moves eastward around noon through the afternoon. Some of this activity could reach northeast Oklahoma by Saturday afternoon. Slightly higher chances are expected Saturday night into early Sunday morning. However, no severe weather is expected.

Weather forecast for the weekend.

High temperatures and heat index until next week.

Upper-level flow is supporting a ridge of high pressure to our west and a developing mid-level low pressure system over the Central Plains. This low pressure system will remain separated from upper-level flow for a few days before moving eastward by the middle of next week.

This pattern creates the potential for showers and storms and associated cloud cover that will keep our daytime highs well below seasonal averages. Although some low-elevation moisture returns this weekend, no significant heat index values will occur. The possibility of a few additional showers or storms will remain early next week, primarily in the far eastern portions of the area, until the mid-level low pressure system moves eastward. We expect normal July heat and humidity to return by the end of next week.

EMSA HEAT SAFETY TIPS:

  1. Staying hydrated is key to preventing heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte drinks several hours before and during prolonged exposure to summer heat.
  2. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when working outdoors, and take frequent breaks in the shade.
  3. No alcohol or caffeine.
  4. If you don’t have air conditioning, find a cooling station or a public place (such as libraries or shopping malls) during the day.
  5. Do not restrict the use of the air conditioning.
  6. When working outside, use the buddy system and look out for older neighbors.
  7. Always carry a mobile phone with you when outdoors, including when walking, running daily errands, gardening, or participating in sports or physical activity.
