A 2-year-old girl walking with classmates from daycare in southeast D.C. was shot and injured when several gunmen jumped out of a car and opened fire Thursday morning, killing two men and wounding a third man, authorities said.

Multiple gunmen opened fire at the corner of 22nd Street and Savannah Street SE. Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith told reporters that the search for the shooters was ongoing.

At around 11:20 a.m., patrol officers heard gunshots and found that three men had been shot. Two of the men were pronounced dead, and a third was taken to a hospital with presumed non-fatal injuries.

Three people with guns jumped out of a car, Smith said.

“At the same time, a group, including the two-year-old victim, left a daycare center for their morning walk and were hit by a bullet,” the police chief said.

The little girl was taken to hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Other children were not physically injured. A rescue helicopter was called to the scene of the accident.

“This is another example of gun violence that we cannot tolerate in our communities. We are tired of it,” Smith said.

Police are looking for a blue Dodge Charger with heavily tinted windows. The new Real-Time Crime Center in Washington captured images of the Charger and another car. Police believe the shooters got out of one car and jumped into the other.

“If you know something, say so,” said the boss.

Neither the names of the men killed nor information about a possible motive for the shooting were immediately released.
