A Jamia Millia Islamia professor has been suspended and the university has ordered an inquiry into complaints of sexual harassment filed against him by four doctoral students, officials said, adding that one of the doctoral students had to withdraw his admission due to the alleged harassment.

Mohammad Shakeel, the university’s acting vice-chancellor, ordered the suspension on Tuesday, citing his emergency powers, officials said. The inquiry has been submitted to the university’s internal complaints committee, an order said.

In the order, the registrar noted that the suspension was initiated in a letter from the Faculty of Social Sciences after “specific complaints of sexual harassment, lack of cooperation, disrespectful behavior, undisciplined, boorish and uncivilized language.” Four doctoral students accused the professor of using “uncivilized language” and making “explicit sexual advances” during his lecture.

The government considers the matter “at first glance” to be “extremely serious,” officials said.

The professor has been ordered not to leave Delhi (Headquarters) without prior permission from the concerned authority. He has been barred from attending classes until the investigation is completed and has to register his attendance in the office of the Superintendent of the University.
