Two Georgia football players arrested for reckless driving in SEPARATE incidents

Two University of Georgia football players were arrested for reckless driving – further damaging the reputation of the prestigious program.

On Thursday morning, it was announced that offensive lineman Bo Hughley was involved in a car accident in which he failed to maintain his lane and drove recklessly.

In another incident, linebacker Smael Mondon was also charged with reckless driving and racing.

This came one day after an update was released on a drunken driving case involving running back Trevor Etienne.

Etienne’s case, which involved charges of driving under the influence and driving under 21, was dismissed – while the running back pleaded guilty and no contest to charges of reckless driving related to an incident in March.

This incident occurred shortly after Etienne announced his transfer from Florida to Georgia after two seasons.

Coach Kirby Smart said at the time: “I want to start by repeating what I said last week about the kid: He’s a great kid from a great family, and he’s done a great job since he’s been here.”

“As we all know, young people don’t always make good decisions. He’s embarrassed, he’s upset, it’s a teaching moment and I hope he learns from it. He will be subject to both internal and university disciplinary action.”

Hughley is a freshman, while Mondon is a junior who made 42 solo tackles and three sacks last season.

Driving problems have plagued the Bulldogs program since winning a national title in January 2023.

Most notably, offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiter Chandler LeCroy were killed in the Jan. 15, 2023, crash in Athens, Georgia, following a reckless driving incident believed to have been caused by street racing. LeCroy was driving the crashed SUV while allegedly racing his car against defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

LeCroy was reportedly driving at more than 104 mph when the SUV crashed into trees and power poles. Her blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.

Carter, who now plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, received 12 months probation and a $1,000 fine after pleading guilty to a charge of reckless driving. He was stopped by police just months earlier and given a speeding warning.

In September, former Georgia player and current program employee Jarvis Jones was arrested for speeding and reckless driving.

In total, no fewer than 15 players have been arrested or ticketed for speeding and reckless driving since the fatal accident that killed Willock and LeCroy.

In a lawsuit filed in July 2023 in connection with the fatal accident, those responsible for the program were accused of negligence because employees regularly drove department vehicles while under the influence of alcohol.

In addition, LeCroy was issued at least four speeding violations in four counties from 2016 to 2022 – at least one of those violations was reportedly known to program officials.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart stressed that he and his colleagues were working to resolve the issue, but last year he dismissed the notion that the deaths could have been prevented by a different team policy.

“This accident was not caused by a policy or the lack of one,” Smart told Online Athens in 2023.
