American Airlines flight takeoff aborted after tire problem on runway

An American Airlines flight was canceled after a tire problem occurred during an attempted takeoff in Tampa on Wednesday morning, the airline said.

Flight 590, bound for Phoenix, “experienced a mechanical issue on the runway prior to takeoff,” American Airlines said in a statement. Tampa International Airport said the incident occurred just before 8 a.m.

The statement further said that the problem was with some of the aircraft’s tires.

A video of the incident shows one of the rear tires breaking apart and starting to emit smoke as the plane accelerated down the runway. The plane then immediately braked and aborted takeoff.

No injuries were reported in the incident and all 176 passengers were able to safely disembark the plane and were bused back to the terminal, the airline said. Six crew members were also able to board.

According to the airline, the passengers were rebooked on a new flight from Tampa, which has now departed.

“We do not want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans in any way and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused,” American Airlines said.
