Shinde Sena chairman suspended from party post 4 days after his son’s BMW accident

Mumbai:

Rajesh Shah, the father of Mihir Shah, the main accused in the BMW hit-and-run case, was suspended from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena four days after his arrest.

Shah was a Sena politician from Palghar district. His suspension was ordered by Mr Shinde.

His son Mihir has reportedly admitted to driving the luxury sedan when it collided with a two-wheeler at 5.30 am on Sunday, leaving a 45-year-old woman dead and her husband injured.

However, sources told NDTV that Mihir Shah denied the allegations that he was drunk.

Rajesh Shah was arrested on Sunday, a few hours after the clash.

The husband had complained to the police and Worli police officers caught Rajesh Shah and family driver Rajrishi Bidawat in the BMW when Mihir Shah hit the motorcycle and destroyed evidence.

Police also believe that Rajesh Shah and Bidawat Mihir Shah helped them escape; several phone conversations between father and son were recorded immediately after the encounter.

However, Rajesh Shah was released a day after his arrest on bail of Rs 15,000.

Bidawat remains in prison.

All three face a number of charges, including intentional homicide not amounting to murder.

The horrific clash in Mumbai’s Worli district occurred hours after Mihir Shah and four of his friends were at Juhu’s Vice-Global Tapas Bar. NDTV has obtained a copy of the credit card statement for Rs 18,730.

The bar was sealed on Tuesday and parts were demolished this afternoon.

Apart from serving alcohol to minors – Mihir Shah is 24 and the minimum drinking age in Mumbai is 25 – the bar was also closed for serving alcohol without a proper license and for illegal construction on the property. These illegal structures have been demolished.

Shah went into hiding after the tragic incident. He may have received help from his mother and two sisters, police said. He was arrested more than 72 hours later in Virar near Mumbai.

His mother and sisters were also taken into custody.

The woman killed is 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa. She was travelling with her husband Pradip when the BMW driver lost control and rammed the two-wheeler.

Horrific details of the accident have emerged, including CCTV footage showing Ms Nakhwa being dragged for 1.5 kilometres after the collision before the BMW was stopped.

Police said the footage also showed Shah then swapping places with Bidawat, pulling the woman’s body out from under the car and leaving it on the road. The car was then driven away.

The husband spoke to NDTV and lamented the shocking death of his wife.

“I ran half a kilometre after the car but could not find the body. I cried and screamed but he did not stop. If he had stopped for even a second, nothing would have happened,” Mr Nakhwa said.
