According to a July 5 report by independent Russian media Meduza and Mediazona, around 120,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the start of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Meduza and Mediazona, together with BBC News Russian, have long documented the names of Russian soldiers killed in combat Ukraine through open source research.

In February, media estimated that 83,000 Russian soldiers had been killed, based on analysis of a restricted but unclassified database of Inheritance matters.

They then compared the trends with those in publicly available death data from the Russian State Statistics Service, records from the Russian Probate Registry, and obituaries.

On June 28, they announced the names of over 56,000 Russian soldiers killed since 2022.

Meduza and Mediazona have since updated their data collection methodology, as the time and resources required to sift through the data once it is available leads to significant delays, sometimes up to six months.

They have now developed a new method for creating “quick estimates”.

“According to our latest calculations, about 120,000 Russian soldiers have died in the war since 2022 through the end of June, but the real number could be as high as 140,000,” Meduza wrote.

The Ukrainian General Staff estimates that the personnel losses of the Russian military over 500,000 on May 25, 2024.

There is general consensus that this includes dead, wounded, missing and prisoners.

In February, Zelenskyy said that 180,000 Russian soldiers had been killed since the start of the open war. The president said that over 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed in the same period.

Western officials gave similar estimates of Russian losses on the battlefield.

Leo Docherty, British Minister of State for the Armed Forces, said at the end of April that Britain estimated Russian losses at over 450,000.

“We estimate that around 450,000 Russian servicemen have been killed or wounded since the conflict began, and tens of thousands more have already deserted,” Docherty told parliament.

“The number of Russian private military companies (PMCs) killed is unclear,” he added.

A US estimate published on December 12 put the total at 315,000On the same day, the Ukrainian politician 340,650.

While Russian losses in Ukraine reach the 500,000 mark, Putin is burying future demographic risks in his own country

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, over half a million Russian soldiers were killed or wounded during the 27-month war in Ukraine. This horrifying figure is in line with estimates by Britain and France, which stated in early May that total Russian losses amounted to
