Valdosta man arrested in connection with South Fry Street shooting

Arrested: Harviere Tarpley, African American, 62 years old, resident of Valdosta

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Valdosta Police Officers responded to an address in
in the 400 block of South Fry Street after a citizen called 911 to report a shooting. When officers arrived
Inside the store, they found a 53-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his arm. South Georgia Medical
The center’s emergency services arrived and took the victim to the hospital for treatment.

Detectives and forensic investigators responded and began investigating the incident.

Through witness statements and surveillance videos in the area, investigators identified Harviere Tarpley, a
62-year-old man as the perpetrator. The investigation revealed that Tarpley went behind a store, exposed himself and then began to urinate. When the victim asked him to stop and leave the area, Tarpley pulled out a firearm and shot him.

On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Tarpley for:

  • Aggravated assault – crime;
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a serious crime; and
  • Causing a public nuisance – misdemeanor.

After detectives obtained arrest warrants, they found Tarpley at his residence. He was arrested without incident and taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

Further charges are being brought against Tarpley.

“This offender’s callous act of violence against someone he did not know is senseless. I am proud of the quick work of our investigators in tracking him down and taking him into custody,” said Police Chief Leslie Manahan.
