DC police respond to 6 shootings and a stabbing within 12 hours

Washington DC police said they responded to six shootings and one stabbing in a roughly 12-hour period from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning, an outbreak of violence that left two men dead.

On Saturday, police received a call reporting a shooting at 1:30 p.m. Officers arrived in the 1800 block of Providence Street NE and found a man with a gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A similar call came in less than three hours later at 4:10 p.m. reporting a shooting in the 2700 block of Shipley Terrace SE. Officers also found a man dead there.

Four of the shootings and the stabbing occurred within a three-hour period beginning at 11 p.m. After a report of a shooting at 11:18 p.m., police responded to the 2800 block of Pomeroy Road SE and found an injured but alive man. Police said he was taken to a hospital.

Less than 30 minutes later, a caller reported a shooting at the intersection of 28th Street and R Street SE. One man was taken to the hospital, police said.

Then, at 12:54 a.m. Sunday, a man entered a fire station in the 2800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE to be treated for gunshot wounds. He, too, was taken to a hospital.

Five minutes later, at 12:59 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 6100 block of Banks Place NE that left three women injured. Police said the injuries were not life-threatening.

The last violent crime of the eventful 12-hour period was reported at 1:42 a.m., when a woman was stabbed in the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue NE. Police said her injuries were also not life-threatening.

Police did not identify the victims or suspects.

The wave of violence came just five days before July 4, a holiday with a deadly reputation in the nation’s capital and across the country. Last year, five people were fatally shot in separate incidents in Washington, DC, on July 4 and 5, while a shooting during Independence Day celebrations left nine people injured.

Despite the weekend’s shootings, violence in DC is on the decline. While 2023 was the deadliest year in the District since 1997, 2024 saw fewer violent crimes. According to police data, violent crime in DC is down 29 percent so far this year compared to last year, including a 24 percent drop in murders and assaults with dangerous weapons.
