Further arrest after restaurant business closed

Railway police have arrested another person for raping a young woman on the Udayan Express train from Sylhet to Chattogram.

Abdur Rauf Rasel, 28, of SA Corporation was arrested in Qutubpur district of Begumganj upazila in Noakhali on Thursday.

The police have so far arrested four people in connection with the rape case.

The operations of SA Corporation, which serves food on the Udayan Express train, have been suspended.

“Although three people were arrested after the incident, Russell managed to escape and went to Noakhali,” said Mohammad Hasan Chowdhury, superintendent of police of Chattogram District Railway Police.

“He was arrested following a tip-off.”

A young woman claimed she was raped in the dining compartment of the Udayan Express train that left Sylhet on Tuesday evening.

After the train reached Chattogram on Wednesday morning, the young woman complained to the GRP police and three SA Corporation employees were arrested.

“The young woman boarded the train from Sylhet railway station to travel to Chattogram. She claimed that she was raped en route,” said SM Shahidul Islam, chief of the GRP police station in Chattogram.

The OC said the survivor filed a complaint with the police station and accused four people.

SA CORPORATION SERVICE SUSPENDED

Following these allegations, the railway authorities have stopped the food supply to the Udayan Express train by the SA Corporation.

“Since there is a complaint, it needs to be investigated. Therefore, the operation of SA Corporation’s Udayan Express train has been suspended pending the report,” said Mohammad Abu Bakr Siddiqui, deputy commercial manager of Eastern Railway.

A committee has been set up to investigate the incident, he said.
