  • Tamayo Perry, 49, was found with multiple shark bites off the coast of Oahu

Surfing legend Tamayo Perry, who once appeared in a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, was killed in a shark attack while surfing in Hawaii on Sunday.

According to Stab Magazine, 49-year-old Perry was found by local surfers off Mālaekahana Beach on the north shore of Oahu, missing an arm and a leg.

He was surfing waves during a break from his lifeguard duties when the accident happened.

Perry appeared to have suffered more than just a possible shark bite, rescuers said.

Lifeguards then brought Perry to shore on a jet ski and paramedics confirmed his death, officials said at a press conference.

Following the attack, Ocean Safety personnel issued shark warnings in the area.

Perry was born in 1975 and grew up on the east side of Oahu. He made a career on the north shore as a professional surfer and later as a lifeguard.

He started surfing at the age of 12, and as a teenager, Perry was considered, according to the Encyclopedia of Surfing, to be “the quiet, up-and-coming local kid who had to borrow surfboards because he had no sponsors.”

“By 1997, the wiry goofy-footer had come a long way in developing a tube-riding style that combined characteristics of Gerry Lopez and Tom Carroll, his two favorite old-school pipeline surfers,” it says.

Two years later, Perry won the Pipeline Masters, and by 2005 he was widely regarded as one of Pipeline’s most famous surfers, attracting attention with his smile and casual attitude when battling big waves.

Perry appeared in the 2002 hit “Blue Crush,” which starred Kate Bosworth, Michelle Rodriguez and Sanoe Lake.
His charisma and skills earned him roles in Hollywood films such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”

His charisma and skills also earned him roles in the hit films “Blue Crush” (2002), “Lost,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Hawaii Five-0.”

Perry also shot commercials for the Nissan Xterra that aired during the NFL playoffs and the Winter Olympics, as well as a spot for Coca-Cola, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

He finally joined Ocean Safety in 2016 and began sharing his passion for surfing by founding the Oahu Surfing Experience with his wife Emilia.

“As an avid water sports enthusiast, I have acquired an enormous amount of knowledge, not only through what I have achieved, but also through what I have suffered,” he wrote in his biography for the surf school.

In the short description, Perry revealed that he almost lost his life, but that it inspired him to make the most of every day.

“A few years ago I had a near-fatal accident while surfing the Pipeline in size extra large,” he said, without going into details.

“The incident occurred solely due to the carelessness of another person.”

“The lessons I learned from this event inspired my goal of teaching my students proper surfing etiquette and safety.”

He was found off Mālaekahana Beach on the north shore of Oahu by local surfers. One arm and one leg were missing.
In recent years, Perry has worked with his wife Emilia and taught others how to surf

Kurt Lager, acting director of the Honolulu Department of Marine Safety, said: “Tamayo Perry was a beloved lifeguard, well known on the North Shore and a world-renowned professional surfer.”

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more.”

“Our condolences go out to Tamayo’s family and the entire lifeguard ohana. We ask that his family have some privacy during this time.”

Mayor Rick Blangiardi echoed Lager’s call to give Perry’s family time to grieve.

He said the community was devastated by a “tragic loss”, adding: “Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected fisherman (…), a great member of our Ocean Safety team. It’s really hard to imagine, so we just want to pay our respects to our guys.”

“I hope everyone wishes the family all the best and respects the situation.”

Jason Bitzer, for whom Perry was like a family member, wrote a touching tribute on Facebook: “What we have seen! My brother in Christ, I love you buddy! Tamayo, I will not get over this until I see you in heaven.”

“Tamayo Perry, you were not my friend, you were my brother. The pain we all feel is enormous.”

Perry’s death is the second fatal shark attack on Oahu this month.
