Washington police investigate handbag theft during trade fair

Washington police are searching for clues leading to the identity of the woman accused of stealing a purse during communion Sunday at the Church of the Blessed Conception in Washington.

Washington police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman accused of stealing a purse during Sunday mass at a local church.

According to a post on the police department’s Facebook page, the theft occurred while the unidentified churchgoer was receiving communion during Mass at Immaculate Conception Church-St. James Parish. A woman stole the unattended purse and fled the church on foot. Security cameras captured her leaving the building.

According to police, the handbag contained a gun, cash and credit cards.

Jennifer Antkowiak, spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, said the diocese was “saddened” to learn of the theft.

“While our parishes are taking all appropriate measures to protect parishioners while attending worship services, it is important that we all take care of ourselves and our belongings when we leave our homes,” Antkowiak said in an email.

Antkowiak added that churchgoers should refrain from bringing their weapons to mass.

“We have since learned that the purse stolen in this case contained the owner’s personal firearm,” Antkowiak said. “As a reminder, it is the policy of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and its parishes that firearms are not allowed on church property unless brought by members of law enforcement.”

As of Wednesday, police had no suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call 724-223-4226 or send a private message to the Washington Police Department’s Facebook account.
