Atlanta United star striker transfers to Mexican club – 95.5 WSB

ATLANTA — An Atlanta United forward who has been with the team for two seasons has transferred to a major Mexican soccer club, the team announced Sunday.

Star striker Giorgos Giakoumakis is heading to Cruz Azul of the Liga MX for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Giakoumakis had started 32 of the 41 matches he played for the club. During his time at the club, he scored 24 goals and recorded seven assists.

“We are grateful for Giorgos’ contributions during his time at the club and wish him the best for the future,” said Carlos Bocanegra, vice president and technical director of Atlanta United. “This transfer illustrates the nature of operating in a global market. With a lot of season left, we plan to strengthen the group during the next summer transfer window.

The loss of Giakoumakis opens up a place for him in the club’s 2024 squad.

Earlier this month, Atlanta fired head coach Gonzalo Pineda after the team’s poor start to the season.

United are in 13th place in the MLS Western Conference.
