South Shore fire leaves one dead and several children injured – NBC Chicago

According to fire officials, a fire in a residential building on the South Shore early Saturday morning left one person dead and four injured, including two small children.

The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. in a multi-story apartment building in the 2400 block of East 78th Street, officials said.

According to authorities, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were injured in the fire. Three of the victims are in critical condition, including two children, a three-year-old and a five-year-old.

According to officials, another victim, an adult, was hospitalized in good condition.

A woman at the scene told NBC Chicago’s Courtney Sisk that her child was injured in the fire.

The woman, who said she and her child were migrants from Venezuela, said they woke up next to the flames and did not know what had happened.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation.
